REE, Zr, Nb concentrations and Sr, Nd isotope compositions have been measured in Copley basalts and andesites, Balaklala rhyolites, and Mule Mountain trondhjemites (northern California) which represent the deep layers of a well preserved intra-oceanic island arc of Siluro-Devonian age.87Sr/86Sr is shifted towards high values (up to 0.707) whereas Ce is preferentially removed from rhyolites. A large proportion of the analyzed samples including some acidic rocks shows a pronounced depletion in light REE. The εNd(T) values of most Copley, Balaklala, and Mule Mountain rocks fall in the range +6 to +8 which suggests that they originated from a normal MORB-type source (εNd(T) ≈ +9) contaminated with either sediments or an OIB-type component.In modern island arcs, only the shallow levels are accessible: comparison with the Copley-Balaklala-Mule Mountain Series suggests that, at depth, an immature island arc is likely to comprise thick layers of LILE-depleted tholeiites and rhyolites intensely altered by pervasive circulation of seawater. Least-square solutions of trace element models suggest that rhyolites and trondhjemites represent remelting of mafic volcanics from the arc basement rather than residual melts of basalt-andesite differentiation.  相似文献

Two climate simulations of 150 years, performed with a coupled ocean/sea-ice/atmosphere model including stratospheric ozone, respectively with and without heterogeneous chemistry, simulate the tropospheric warming associated with an increase of the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide and other trace gases since 1950 and their impact on sea–ice extent, as well as the stratospheric cooling and its impact on ozone concentration. The scenario with heterogeneous chemistry reproduces the formation of the ozone hole over the South Pole from the 1970s and its deepening until the present time, and shows that the ozone hole should progressively fill during the coming decades. An improved method to estimate the time-varying drift of measured conductivity from autonomous CTD profiling floats has been developed. This procedure extends previous methods developed by Wong, Johnson and Owens [2003. Delayed-mode calibration of autonomous CTD profiling float salinity data by θS climatology. Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 20, 308–318] and Böhme and Send [2005. Objective analyses of hydrographic data for referencing profiling float salinities in highly variable environments. Deep-Sea Research Part II, 52, 651–664]. It uses climatological salinity interpolated to the float positions and observed θ surfaces and chooses 10 ‘best’ levels that are within well-mixed mode waters or deep homogeneous water masses. A piece-wise linear fit is used to estimate the temporally varying multiplicative adjustment to the float potential conductivities. An objective, statistical method is used to choose the breakpoints in the float time series where there are multiple drift trends. In the previous methods these breakpoints were chosen subjectively by manually splitting the time series into separate segments over which the fits were made. Our statistical procedure reduces the subjectivity by providing an automated way for doing the piece-wise linear fit. Uncertainties in this predicted adjustment are estimated using a Monte-Carlo simulation. Examples of this new procedure as applied to two Argo floats are presented.  相似文献

The effect of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on Am(III), Pu(IV), Np(V), and U(VI) sorption was investigated with natural water (pH ∼8) and zeolitized tuff samples collected from the Rainier Mesa tunnel system, Nevada Test Site, where the USA detonated underground nuclear tests prior to 1992. Perched vadose zone water at Rainier Mesa has high levels of DOM as a result of microbial degradation of mining debris (diesel, wood, etc.). The Am and Pu sorption Kds were up to two orders of magnitude lower in water with high DOM (15-19 mg C/L) compared to the same water with DOM removed (<0.4 mg C/L) or in naturally low DOM (0.2 mg C/L) groundwater. In contrast, Kds of Np and U were less affected by DOM at these solution conditions. Uranium sorption decreased as a result of high dissolved inorganic C (DIC) resulting from microbial degradation of DOM. Thermodynamic model predictions, based on actinide-humic acid stability constants available in the literature, are in general agreement with measured Kd data, correctly predicting the effects of DIC and DOM on actinide retardation. This agreement is encouraging to future modeling efforts and suggests that effects of DOM and DIC can be incorporated into reactive transport modeling predictions. The Am and Pu transport rates in Rainier Mesa tunnel waters will be substantially faster as a result of the elevated DOM levels. Low diffusion rates of actinide-DOM macromolecular complexes may focus Pu and Am transport into fractures and minimize retardation via matrix diffusion. The resulting transport behavior will affect actinide distribution patterns and associated risk estimates.  相似文献

Summary. Synthetic great circle Rayleigh wave phase velocities are generated from a 3-D upper mantle model for two great circle distributions: a uniform random distribution and an experimental distribution arising from a real set of sources and receivers. Given a tectonic regionalization, the retrieval of the pure path velocities from these great circle data sets leads to a strongly biased solution when the uniform distribution is used, whereas the results from the experimental distribution are closer to the true values. An analysis of the data importances and the information distribution in the data indicates that the great circles introduce coupling between tectonic regions; thus the degeneracy of the solution inherent in great circle data cannot be completely overcome by introducing a tectonic regionalization. It is shown that a satisfactory solution is obtained by selecting data as pure as possible, i.e. data that over-sample one tectonic region without oversampling the others. This condition is better fulfilled by the experimental distribution than by the uniform distribution.  相似文献

Models of population synthesis for the Galaxy have been developed in order to understand galactic structure and evolution. They allow to test scenarii of evolution by comparisons between model predictions and observed distributions. Forthcoming near-infrared surveys will enormously increase the amount of information about the distributions of late type stars in the Galaxy. We show here how population synthesis models will help to analyse these surveys and to interprete them in terms of mass function, star formation history and stellar evolution.  相似文献

The need for quantitative molecular methods is growing in environmental, food, and medical fields but is hindered by low and variable DNA extraction and by co-extraction of PCR inhibitors. DNA extracts from Enterococcus faecium, seawater, and seawater spiked with E. faecium and Vibrio parahaemolyticus were tested by qPCR for target recovery and inhibition. Conventional and novel methods were tested, including Synchronous Coefficient of Drag Alteration (SCODA) and lysis and purification systems used on an automated genetic sensor (the Environmental Sample Processor, ESP). Variable qPCR target recovery and inhibition were measured, significantly affecting target quantification. An aggressive lysis method that utilized chemical, enzymatic, and mechanical disruption enhanced target recovery compared to commercial kit protocols. SCODA purification did not show marked improvement over commercial spin columns. Overall, data suggested a general need to improve sample preparation and to accurately assess and account for DNA recovery and inhibition in qPCR applications.  相似文献

Abstract

We propose that international climate change policy would be strengthened by the development and adoption of targets for atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases 25–50 years in the future in addition to near- and long-term targets. ‘Interim concentration targets’, which could be accommodated under the current Convention/Protocol framework, would provide several advantages over the current focus on either the short term (e.g. Kyoto Protocol) or the long term (e.g. ultimate stabilization targets). Interim targets would help constrain rates of climate change (which are not sufficiently addressed by short- or long-term targets, even when paired together). They would also provide a means for keeping open the option of achieving a range of long-term goals while uncertainty (and political disagreement) over the appropriate goal is resolved. We substantiate a number of rationales for such an approach, discuss the use of interim targets in other contexts, and illustrate how such targets for climate change policy might be set.  相似文献
